Book Club Meeting
May 8, 2013
Gentle Readers,
You are invited to a book club meeting hosted by Wardah Books.
We will be discussing Tariq Ramadan’s ‘In the Footsteps of the Prophet’ (published by Oxford University Press), also titled ‘The Messenger’ (published by Penguin Books). The book club is only open to those who have read the book.
The book club is not a class, it’s a purposeful conversation amongst readers who have all finished reading the same book.
The book club will be held on 29 May 2013, Wednesday at 7.45pm, at Wardah Books.
If you would like to attend please register by sending an email to ibrahim@wardahbooks.com.
We will close registration when we reach our target attendance of 12 people.

Between Heaven and Hell: Islam, Salvation, and the Fate of Others
| ed. Mohammad Hassan Khalil
In this work scholars representing a diversity of backgrounds and viewpoints address the question of non-Muslim salvation: according to the Islamic ethos (however understood), what can be said about the status and fate of non-Muslims? While some limit themselves to its historical dimensions, others approach it as theologians and philosophers, while yet others focus on the relationship between this-worldly relations with Others and next-worldly conceptions of salvation. Collectively and individually, the essays in this volume advance our understanding of Islamic thought and Muslim societies and indeed the discourse on religious diversity. This groundbreaking volume does not conclude with neat resolutions; instead, it offers fascinating expositions, debates, and points of departure for further contemplation.
The Homeland Is the Arena: Religion, Transnationalism, and the Integration of Senegalese Immigrants in America
| Ousmane Kane
From Tokyo to Melbourne, from Turin to Buenos Aires, from to Paris to New York, 300,000 Senegalese immigrants are negotiating their integration into their host society and seriously impacting the development of their homeland. This book addresses the modes of organization of transnational societies in the globalized context, and specifically the role of religion in the experience of migrant communities in Western societies. Ousmane Kane offers a case study of the growing Senegalese community in New York City.
Ibn Taymiyya and His Times
| Yossef Rapoport, Shahab Ahmed
Taqi al-Din Ibn Taymiyya (1263-1328), one of the most controversial thinkers in Islamic religious history, was repeatedly imprisoned during his lifetime. Today, he is revered by the Wahhabi movement and championed by Salafi groups who call for a return to the “pristine golden age of the Prophet” s.a.w.. Ibn Taymiyya’s writings have also been used by radical groups, such as al-Qaeda, to justify acts of terrorism and armed struggle. In order to explain this modern influence, this volume offers a fresh perspective on Ibn Taymiyya’s life, thought and legacy. This is the first comprehensive academic treatment of Ibn Taymiyya to appear in a Western language in over half a century. It is of major importance to scholars of Islamic intellectual history, as well as to the students of modern Islamic movements and ideologies.
In the House of War: Dutch Islam Observed
| Ussama (Sam) Cherribi
Sam Cherribi is a Moroccan Muslim who became a naturalized Dutch citizen and member of the Dutch Parliament. In this book he draws on his personal experiences with European politics and media, extensive fieldwork in Dutch mosques, and interviews with imams. In recent years, the Netherlands has been swept by the same forces of change that have swept the rest of Europe – the consolidation of the European Union, a massive influx of Muslim immigrants and the rising voice of Islamic fundamentalism. Cherribi argues that this small country has amplified these forces, providing a useful lens through which to examine trends in all of Europe. The portents are troubling, he notes, as evidenced by the murders of journalist Pim Fortuyn and filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, after which riots broke out, mosques were burned, and Muslims were openly reviled by the public and the media. Cherribi was voted out of Parliament in the anti-migrant fervor that engulfed the Netherlands after these murders and like many other Dutch Muslims he emigrated to the United States.

Postulates of the Thematic
| Shaykh Ebrahim Etsko Schuitema
‘The Postulates of the Thematic’ was originally written as the postscript to ‘Intent’. It is the essence of the book, distilled into sixty eight points or ‘postulates’. These postulates look at psychology, sociology, economics, the sociology of small groups, business science, social anthropology, and political science. The purpose of the text is to demonstrate that the issue of intent can serve as the golden thread to bind the various disciplines concerned with being humans together, from the level of the individual, to the level of the collective.

New Arrivals Mid-Feb 2012
February 17, 2012
On the occasion of Wardah’s 10th anniversary on 15 Feb 2012, we would like to share with all of you what we feel about books.
According to Andrew Haslam, a book is a portable container consisting of a series of printed and bound pages that preserves, announces, expounds, and transmits knowledge to a literate readership across time and space. Experience informs us that the simple act of reading necessitates the seeking of stillness, of quiet. Books enable readers to patiently listen to the voice of the author speaking from within their own minds. Books also allow readers to pause and consider, tinker or question an abstract idea or even a chain of ideas. Each book we’ve read and placed on the bookshelf is a time capsule of our emotions, ideas and states retrievable years and decades from now. Wardah believes that the humble book is a technology unto itself, more than that, it is a system, perhaps a pedagogy, that moulds minds that reflect and ruminate, rooted in a continuum spanning the breadth of human civilization.
E-reading devices and their ilk are all caricatures of the printed book. People who read on screens find themselves scanning more than reading, and hyperlinking rather than thinking. And with the ‘integration’ of social media in reading devices, the mind would be compelled to spiral down the gurgling sinkhole of trivial distraction.
We ask you, dear reader, to realise that you have the choice of not drowning in a deluge of data and dispersion. Choose a medium that does not consume you. Choose to read a book.
That said, we are pleased to announce the arrival of the following titles to our store on Bussorah Street.

The text starts by elucidating the love of God for humanity and the love of man for God, and proceeds to discuss the deepening of this love to include different degrees of longing, intimacy and contentment.

Death and the Dervish
| Selimovic
This exquisite novel, now available to English readers, is a first-person narrative told from the point of view of Sheikh Nuruddin, a dervish at a Sarajevo lodge in the 18th century during the Turkish occupation.
The spiritual leader of a group of Sufis, Sheikh Nuruddin deliberately removed himself from society. This distance is shattered, though, by the arrest of his brother. As Sheikh Nuruddin attempts to find out what has happened to his brother and to intervene on his behalf, he is drawn into the Kafkaesque world of the Turkish authorities. As he does so, he begins to question his relations with society as a whole and, eventually, his own life choices.
What Sallamah Didn’t Know
| Sharon Ismail, illustrations by Khairudin Saharom
A true story of a Singapore childhood, adoption and racial identity.
Sallamah grew up thinking that her life was ordinary. She lived in an ordinary kampong with an ordinary family and has an ordinary group of friends whom she played ordinary games with. Little did she realise that a piece of paper would change the reality of all that she knew and understood.
Join Sallamah as she goes on a journey to understand the true meaning of family. Is ‘family’ the one who gives birth to you? Or, are they the people who love and care for you?
