New Arrivals Mid-Feb 2012

February 17, 2012

On the occasion of Wardah’s 10th anniversary on 15 Feb 2012, we would like to share with all of you what we feel about books.

According to Andrew Haslam, a book is a portable container consisting of a series of printed and bound pages that preserves, announces, expounds, and transmits knowledge to a literate readership across time and space. Experience informs us that the simple act of reading necessitates the seeking of stillness, of quiet. Books enable readers to patiently listen to the voice of the author speaking from within their own minds. Books also allow readers to pause and consider, tinker or question an abstract idea or even a chain of ideas. Each book we’ve read and placed on the bookshelf is a time capsule of our emotions, ideas and states retrievable years and decades from now. Wardah believes that the humble book is a technology unto itself, more than that, it is a system, perhaps a pedagogy, that moulds minds that reflect and ruminate, rooted in a continuum spanning the breadth of human civilization.
E-reading devices and their ilk are all caricatures of the printed book. People who read on screens find themselves scanning more than reading, and hyperlinking rather than thinking. And with the ‘integration’ of social media in reading devices, the mind would be compelled to spiral down the gurgling sinkhole of trivial distraction.
We ask you, dear reader, to realise that you have the choice of not drowning in a deluge of data and dispersion. Choose a medium that does not consume you. Choose to read a book.

That said, we are pleased to announce the arrival of the following titles to our store on Bussorah Street.

Death and the Dervish
| Selimovic
This exquisite novel, now available to English readers, is a first-person narrative told from the point of view of Sheikh Nuruddin, a dervish at a Sarajevo lodge in the 18th century during the Turkish occupation.

The spiritual leader of a group of Sufis, Sheikh Nuruddin deliberately removed himself from society. This distance is shattered, though, by the arrest of his brother. As Sheikh Nuruddin attempts to find out what has happened to his brother and to intervene on his behalf, he is drawn into the Kafkaesque world of the Turkish authorities. As he does so, he begins to question his relations with society as a whole and, eventually, his own life choices.

Tafsir al-Tustari | Sahl ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Tustari
The earliest surviving Sufi commentary on the Qur’an, this record is not only one of the few authenticated works in Tustari’s name but is also a key source for understanding the mystical thought and teachings of this important and influential Sufi. In addition to insights into the spiritual significance of almost 1,000 verses of the Qur’an, this commentary, presented in complete English translation for the first time, includes numerous references to traditions of the Prophet, explanations of the ethical and mystical dimensions of the religious life, stories of the prophets, and anecdotes about earlier mystics. Generously augmented with explanatory footnotes throughout, the book will provide readers with an invaluable introduction to the Sufi tradition of Qur’anic interpretation and acquaint them with spiritual doctrines fundamental to the later development of Sufism.
Butterfly Mosque: A Young American Woman’s Journey to Love and Islam | Willow Wilson
“In The Butterfly Mosque, Wilson presents an honest, rich portrayal of a Muslim woman’s life experiences with religion, love, and womanhood in a bi-cultural context as she addresses the challenging nuances, and more importantly the positive, delightful interactions she experiences along the way.” – review at muslimahmediawatch.org
A Sufi Master’s Message: In Memoriam Rene Guenon | Abd Al Wahid Pallavicini
Bridging the gap between western intellectual traditions and Islamic mysticism, this book explains the meaning of knowledge in the orthodox line of Sufism. Following the living tradition of intellectual Rene Guenon, the lessons here are intended not as profiles of individual Sufi masters but rather as an expression of an Islamic school of wisdom within the contemplative dimension of Islam.

The Other Parent: The Inside Story of the Media’s Effect on Our Children | James P. Steyer
There’s a stranger in your house. Every day your children are bombarded by images of sex, commercialism, and violence – right in your own home. Kids spend more time each week with media than they do with their parents or teachers, and they learn about the adult world – through the influence of TV, the movies, music, computer games, and the Internet – long before they’re ready. “This is the new media reality,” Steyer, “and it is not one that most parents or children are prepared for.”

Sufi Journey of Baba Rexheb | Frances Trix
Baba Rexheb founded the first Bektashi community in America. This is his life story and the story of his communities: the traditional Bektashi tekke in Albania where he first served, the displaced persons camps to which he escaped after the war, the centuries-old tekke in Cairo where he waited, and the Bektashi community that he founded in Michigan in 1954 and led until his passing in 1995. Baba Rexheb lived through the 20th century, its wars, disruptions, and dislocations, but still at a profound level was never displaced.

The Millennium Discourses | Etsko Schuitema
Within the Darqawi Sufi order a dars is usually delivered by the shaykh or muqaddam after a session of dhikr when all concerned are in a deep and quiet state.
Leadership: The Care and Growth Model | Etsko Schuitema
This book looks at the traditional trade-off between the boss who supplies the wages and the workers who supply the labour, and explains how destructive and unproductive this is. There is a need to move beyond this towards a view of leadership that empowers all subordinates and encourages an unconditional commitment to excellence.
Intent: The Core of Being Human | Etsko Schuitema
Extract from Introduction: “There are many other ways of accounting for the excellence of a person. One could, for example, refer to things such as the accumulation of wealth or power or knowledge. All of these are demonstrably false. We have all known very mature and good people who have been poor and uneducated. We have also met people who have been wealthy, powerful and knowledgeable who are disaster areas as people. The view that money equals happiness is tragically misguided and accounts for much of the emptiness of modern life. It channels the endeavour of people into pursuits that are predestined to deliver them to an alienated state. It sets up a world-view that hardly raises us above the station of animals competing for meagre resources in a hostile world. The chase after money fails to answer the question of how much is enough. Because money presents itself as an end to neediness it offers to buy us an endless stream of consumables that, precisely because they are consumable, deliver us into yet another needy state afterwards. Money is one of those more-ish things that makes the drinker thirsty as he drinks and the eater hungry as he eats.”
The Lamp of Mysteries (Misbah al-Asrar)”, a commentary on the Light Verse of the Qur’an | Isma’il Anqarawi
This book unearths a hidden treasure from the golden age of Ottoman scholarship, an original Arabic commentary by Isma’il Anqarawi on the Light Verse of the Quran, presented here in English for the first time.
Al-Ghazali on Patience and Thankfulness from the Ihya Ulum al-Din
Imam al-Ghazali here presents definitions for patience (sabr) and its different forms; the need for patience; the degrees of patience; and why patience is considered to be half of faith. The second part of this chapter deals with thankfulness (shukr), and again al-Ghazali gives us definitions for thankfulness, its nature, and its blessings.

In-store Event: Philosophical Foundations of Islamic Metaphysics

July 7, 2011

The Philosophical Foundations of Islamic Metaphysics is a discussion-circle series on the basic concepts and formative questions involved in the powerful intellectual encounter between Islamic peripatetic philosophy and Ashari kalam, represented for purposes of this series in the persons and ideas of ibn Sina on the one hand, and al-Ghazali on the other. The objective of the series is twofold. The first is to clarify as much as possible, in the English language, certain basic philosophical terms and concepts which are essential for a full understanding of the nature of the discussions in which they are pivotal. The second is to review some of these discussions, and to facilitate a greater sense of wonder at the analytic rigor and depth of inquiry demonstrated by some of the luminaries of the Islamic intellectual tradition. The material of this series is based largely on the Metaphysics of ibn Sina’s al-Shifa and al-Ghazali’s Tahafut al-Falsafah. The material covered, however, is selected to enrich further reading of other great thinkers in contemporary and later periods of Islamic history, insha’Allah.
