Notebooks from Makkah & Madinah: Author Session
October 12, 2010
“To discover the pot of gold at the foot of the Divine rainbow, our learned Shaikhs advise us that our focus before the pilgrimage is its intention. Following closely on the heels of the niyyah is the nature of our personal conduct, or adab, in travelling to the Bait-ullah (the House of Allah) where we are His guests.”
So begins the first paragraph of Shafiq Morton’s ‘Notebooks from Makkah & Madinah’
Dear Friends
As we enter the season of Haj, Wardah Books is pleased to announce that Shafiq Morton will be at our store on Saturday 16 October 2010, 3pm to 4pm. He will be talking about his new book, ‘Notebooks from Makkah & Madinah’.
Shafiq Morton’s astute observations on the Hijaz, Turkey and modern-day Haj, all seen through a Sunni and Sufi lens, make an engaging and engrossing read.
Shafiq is from Cape Town, South Africa where he works as a radio presenter. ‘Notebooks from Makkah & Madinah’, which is part travel-diary, part essay, showcases his talent for writing and for drawing out stories that resonate in history and tradition – from the Holy Hadiths to the Ihya of Imam Ghazali and the stories of Ayoub Ansari. And perhaps it was in recognition of this talent that his Master, the late Sayyid Muhammad ibn ‘Alawi al-Maliki, gave him the pen with which Shafiq wrote the first draft of ‘Notebooks’.
Everyone is welcome.

Musings on Neil Postman
March 8, 2010
On Saturday 6 March, Amran Noordin was at Wardah Books discussing the thoughts of Neil Postman. It was a small, intimate session and the discussion was lively. We discussed the need to have a ‘conversation’ with technology, to be wary of its application in all spheres of life. On education, we discussed the dangers of bureaucracy, the uncritical use of computers, and the the need for a (or lack of a) narrative.
Postman says in his book Technopoly: Technopoly eliminates alternatives to itself in precisely the way Aldous Huxley outlined in Brave New World. It does not make them illegal. It does not make them immoral. It does not even make them unpopular. It makes them invisible and therefore irrelevant. And it does so by redefining what we mean by religion, by art, by family, by politics, by history, by truth, by privacy, by intelligence, so that our definitions fit its new requirements. Technopoly, in other words, is totalitarian technocracy.
Do join us for future in-store discussions.
