Fatima’s life is best with what seems to be a disasters. Her journey leads her from Morocco to the Mediterranean, Egypt, Turkey and finally, to China that she realizes that what seemed at the time to be really unfortunate events were an integral part of her eventual fulfilment.
This Teaching-Story is well known in Greek folklore, but this version is attributed to Sheikh Mohamed Jamaludin of Adrianople (modern day Edirne) in Turkey who died in 1750. It was first published by Idries Shah in 1967 in his classic work, Tales of the Dervish, Teaching-Stories of Sufi Masters over the past thousand years.
In the Sufi tradition there is a continuum between the children’s story, the entertainment or folklore story, and the instructional of instrumental story. A story can help children deal with difficult situations and give them something to hold on to. It can at the same time, stimulate a deeper understanding in adults.
For more than 30 years, Idries Shah collected such stories and made them available to contemporary Western culture where psychologists and educators commend them for their flexibility and insights in people for all ages.

A is for Allah
Yusuf Islam
“…from day one, most children are mechanically programmed to believe that ‘A’, without question, everlastingly stands for ‘Apple’. The primal etchings on the minds of such innocent beings and the attention teachers give to certain things has a long lasting influence on a person’s perception of the world. The ‘apple’ symbolizes everything that is delicious: the love, colour and taste of this world (dunya) and the gut instinct to satisfy our tummies… My intention… was to teach my daughter that – before all else – ‘Alif’ (as ‘A’ is pronounced in Arabic) is for Allah, and that everything else that we love and appreciate in this earthly life, originates from His Divine Will and grace – apples and all.” – Yusuf Islam
Through the framework of the Arabic Alphabet, the reader – be they child or adult – is introduced or reminded about the fundamental aspects of Islam, from Allah the One, to Jannah the Garden of Paradise etc. This book is complemented by beautiful graphics and stunning photography.
