In this author talk, A.Ubaidillah will discuss the main themes of the duology (In Search of an Oasis & The Golden Oasis), as well the characters’ arcs. He will also discuss the relevance of literature in understanding the humanism of Islam.
A. Ubaidillah is a researcher whose areas of interest are sociology of religion and religious intellectuals. He holds an Islamic Jurisprudence degree from Yarmouk University, Jordan. He has contributed articles and essays for various platforms such as Karyawan, BeritaMediacorp, and Malay Heritage Foundation. He is also the translator of the novella, Tok Sumang, originally written by Malay literary pioneer Muhammad Ariff Ahmad.
The Oasis duology is about two cousins who embark on separate journeys in Jordan. Iskandar years to atone for his sins through religion, while Indra wishes to fulfil his father’s and grandfather’s ambitions for him to be a religious teacher. There, they encounter the two faces of religion and humanity — the good and the evil. Iskandar is enraptured by a religious zealot called Sheikh, while Indra crosses path with a Jordanian woman named Hiba.
Taking place in the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic in Jordan and Singapore, the two cousins must travel the path of redemption to rediscover their humanity, no matter how arduous the journey is.
