Book Club: Sex, Soul and Islam

About the Programme

In this session of A Shared Space Book Club, we will have 2 parts: (1) Book Discussion, and (2) Q&A with the Authors.

In Part 1, we will be exploring the book Sex, Soul and Islam by Osman Sidek & Enon Mansor. From sex in an Islamic worldview, to reframing a prevalently male-serving view of conjugal rights, including how classical Islamic perspective regarding sex might navigate pornography; oral sex; sex toys; fantasy roleplay; and BDSM, the book captures the underlying theme behind the Islamic outlook on lovemaking.

In Part 2, we will be having an in-person meeting with Osman Sidek & Enon Mansor, in which they will answer some of our questions and queries related to the book and their work/writing.

Attendees may look forward to having an honest discussion on sex from the lens of Singaporean Muslims, and being able to hear directly from the authors themselves!

About the Book

SEX, SOUL AND ISLAM tells a story of an unlikely alliance between two opposite elements of the human experience – the carnal and the spiritual. The sexual instinct could potentially spoil the soul’s quest for paradise. Instead, they become companions when a believer embraces Islam’s revelations on the sex-soul connection.

This fascinating title by Singapore counsellors and writers Osman Sidek and Enon Mansor situates sex in an Islamic worldview, revisits the spirit behind the letter of its sexual laws, and describes how paradises on earth can thrive – where married couples may dwell in tranquillity, love and mercy.

Along the way, the book explains how marriage anchors this alliance, reframes a prevalently male-serving view of conjugal rights and reintroduces sensual pleasuring as the underlying theme behind the Islamic outlook on lovemaking.

The authors explain how classical Islamic perspective regarding sex might navigate pornography, oral sex, sex toys, fantasy roleplay and BDSM, among other – using insights from the social sciences, sexual therapy and the writers’ own counselling experience.

You may purchase the book from Wardah Books

About A Shared Space Book Club

A Shared Space Book Club by Maktaba Books aims to bring together individuals from different backgrounds to read various books from an Islamic, Singaporean, and/or Southeast Asian lens. Whether the text is secular or set in an unfamiliar culture, there is always something within a book that each of us can resonate (or disagree!) with.

That shared space is what drives this book club. With each participant’s unique experience and perspective grounded in religion and identity, we discuss our thoughts on a common area found within the pages of a book.
