Readers’ Choice 2025 Announced

Dear Reader,

Alhamdulillah. All praise to Allah who has bequeathed the gift of mutual compassion among the Community of the Praised Prophet ﷺ . And has caused some of the Community to have the means to write and publish works that clarify and navigate complexity.

This year, it gives us booksellers immense pleasure to announce that by popular vote, the 2025 Wardah Readers’ Choice is Why Palestine: Reflections from Singapore. It is the work of Singapore’s own professor of political science, Dr Walid Jumblatt Abdullah.

Why Palestine: Reflections from Singapore
Written by Walid Jumblatt Abdullah, and published by Ethos (Singapore)

We reached out to the Professor and he had this to say:

Why Palestine getting this honour is simply a reflection of the fact that people deeply care about the Palestinian cause. May we all visit a free Palestine in our lifetimes.

Some reviews on the book, submitted by voters:

This is an accessible and powerful read that reminds us why we cannot stay silent. Why Palestine? urges us to use our voices and stand in solidarity, especially when justice feels so distant. It’s a clear and urgent call to remember that it is about settler colonialism. The theft of land, lives, and history continues, but the book reminds us that we must not give in to despair. One of the most significant takeaways for me is that every act of solidarity counts. Whether it’s showing up, speaking out, sharing facts, or holding space. This book reminds us of the power of collective effort, especially in Singapore, where we’ve seen real momentum when people unite to ask for change. It also underscores how knowing the history matters. The forced displacement of Palestinians did not begin on 7 October 2023. It has been ongoing for decades. Once you begin to learn the truth, it becomes impossible to remain unmoved. And most importantly, it’s a reminder to protect our imagination, and to be careful of who we let regulate our dreaming. – @pagesofelly

Thank you Prof Walid for writing such a timely book. It does not just reflect the relevance of humanitarian crises in Gaza to Singapore, but to put in words the voice of helpless Singaporeans in their endeavour to advocate for Palestine. – A’ishah

I like how the book describes everything in detail, and taught me everything that I didn’t know about Palestine. – Adri

A thought-provoking read that challenges silence, indifference, and selective memory. It reminds readers that Palestine is not just a distant conflict, but a question of humanity. A compelling and courageous book that urges one to reflect and do what you can to make a difference. – anonymous

This book is easy to read and I learned a lot from it. The author explained everything in a simple way. – anonymous
