Al-Ghazali on the Condemnation of Pride and Self-Admiration
Al-Ghazali, Mohammed Rustom (tr.)
Book 29 of the Revival of the Religious Sciences
"Know that pride is one of the mortal vices and not a single person is entirely free from it. Removing it is a personal obligation (fard 'ayn). It is not removed by just wishing, but through treatment... Treating pride is through knowledge and action, and its cure is not complete except when the two are brought together."
This work delves into the fundamental spiritual ailments and major impediments of the soul, namely pride and self-admiration. From the beginning of the work, Ghazali states that both pride and self-admiration are forms of spiritual disease.
