Translation, Annotation and Commentary

This work seeks to help the reader experience not just translated words but something of the deep adab and reverence carried by Imām al-Jazūlī’s masterpiece, Dalāʾil al-Khayrāt, through a beautiful, heartfelt translation accompanied by explanations of its key meanings.

Rather than offering a loose paraphrase, this translation stays close to the original wording while remaining clear and natural to read. It is intended not just to be understood, but to be recited — a reliable companion beside the Arabic for daily devotion, reflection, and study.

The English translation is presented opposite the Arabic text, in a structured and readable format designed for daily use.

Particular attention has been given to preserving meaning without obscuring the spiritual cadence of the litanies. The translation therefore remains literal where accuracy demands it and graceful where readability requires it, allowing readers unfamiliar with Arabic to meaningfully participate in the recitation while retaining the reverence intended by the author.

Printed entirely in full colour, the book has been designed as a devotional object as well as a study resource. Clear typography, visual markers, and carefully organised sections guide the reader through the prescribed recitations. The layout supports both individual reading and group gatherings, making the text accessible for long-term, repeated use.

Commentary

Beyond the translation itself, this edition contains an extensive scholarly apparatus. The volume includes over two hundred pages of commentary and explanatory notes. These consist of a commentary devoted to the blessed Prophetic Names, drawn in summarised form from Imām al-Mahdī al-Fāsī’s celebrated Maṭāliʿ al-Masarrāt. The remainder of the notes come from a range of classical and modern sources, clarifying difficult passages, identifying Qurʾānic verses and Prophetic traditions, and explaining points of ʿaqīdah and technical terminology.

These annotations allow the reader not only to recite the text, but to understand it — and to appreciate its meanings within a deeper spiritual context.

Biographical Entries

Biographical entries are provided for the principal transmitters and authorities cited within the work, giving historical context to the chains of transmission that surround the text and situating the reader within the living tradition through which the Dalāʾil has been preserved and practiced.

A substantial introduction precedes the text. It discusses the origins and historical development of the book, its place in Islamic devotional life, and practical guidance on how it is traditionally read and completed. The introduction also explores the relationship between the Dalāʾil al-Khayrāt and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madina — how the book’s immense popularity emerged from the culture of visitation, prayer, and salutation connected to the Prophetic presence, and why it became one of the most widely recited works of devotion throughout the Muslim world.

This edition therefore serves multiple purposes: a reliable translation with adab at its heart, a commentary to add context and provide insights, and an introduction  to the background to the work and how to recite.

By combining faithful translation, helpful explanation, and thoughtful design, it seeks to bring contemporary readers into the company of one of the most beloved works of prayer in the Islamic tradition.
