Jinat Rehana Begum
‘First Fires’ by Jinat Rehana Begum tells the story of a Malay-ised Indian Muslim Singapore family. The novel plays with ideas of self-perception, self-justification, with memory, and how we see members of our family. The characters in the book speak directly to the reader, not to each other, and this gives the reader an intimate view of the inner workings of family relationships. This is the author’s first novel. It is a must-read.
